Snap together board-to-board hinge connector
« on: September 29, 2015, 11:19:52 am »
I've got an idea to make a snap together electrical connector inspired by the lego hinges shown in the images below. The fingers of the hinge would be the electrical contacts and would be spaced/sized so that the connector is only connectable one-way. Before I embark on modelling this and attempting to fabricate it using a 3d printer, I'm wondering if something similar is commercially available. I've thumbed through a couple connector catalogs and tried searching online but haven't found anything yet.

The goal is to allow two PCBs to snap together with a hinged connection so the boards can be unsnapped and re-arranged (and hinged to allow 3D structures). For prototyping, I can just use ribbon cables but I would like to find/make something like the lego hinge shown in the image that is prettier and easier to dis/re-connect.

If something similar or that would work already exists, that's great. If not, if anyone has advice for me if I decide to go down the 3D-printed housing/connector route, I'd be glad to hear it.

Thanks!
