Trying to figure out what component is shown in this diagram.
« on: January 06, 2018, 06:07:58 am »
I was looking at this diagram of how a simple tapped inductor (in effect an autotransformer) is combined with an ignitor for starting and and maintaining current through an arc lamp. It seems like a pretty simple circuit, but the ignitor contains one component I don't recognize the schematic symbol for. In the below diagram you will see symbols in the ignitor part of the circuit for capacitor, resistor, and diodes. But then there's this one component who's symbol looks like the letter Z. I have no idea what component this is. If anybody here knows, please post a reply to this thread.

Spark gap or starter.

So the component with the Z shaped symbol is some kind of spark gap?

I wonder how that overall starter circuit works?

I am quute sure that is a starter

Basically if its a starter, made up of two vertical wire with a small gap and a capacitor in parallel, the voltage create an arc between this plates and bend them, closing the circuit and then the metal cool down and the metal return in the original position, re'creating the arc and so on

Sorry If I am wrong
