I have looked at building a handheld with the form factor of a phone and want to use an SoM with a custom carrier board that possesses the correct MIPI or DSI connector for a specific but yet unchosen display. Considering that I am looking at SoMs that are MIPI/DSI aware, I was thinking about routing the connection straight from the pins on the SODIMM connector to the MIPI/DSI connector. I am not knowledgeable with PCB design just yet but that probably means I have to read up on impedance matching, spacing, etc to make sure the connections are solid. Other than that, is there anything wrong with routing from the gold fingers to the connector in this way?
Other than routing, I'm also wondering about the process of speaking with a DSI/MIPI display. From what I have read, the process of interfacing with these displays requires knowledge of MIPI commands and any initialization sequence required by a specific display. With those in hand, do I really need anything else to drive these displays? I'm still fuzzy on the overall process but I want to get the gist of the prerequisites before going further.
