Marx Generator With Inductors
« on: May 01, 2022, 07:02:44 pm »
I'm sure someone out there has some know how about Marx Generators that use inductors in place of the charging resistors- I've seen one demo on your tube and a referrence to a massive rock smasher Marx but little else- I'm looking for some help with this, mostly from a design point of view.
The indcutors allow for very fast charging to the full HV input all the way to the final stage so much larger caps can be used. This topology is capable of very high repetition rates. I need some guidance on dimensioning the circuit. The indcutors also clearly store energy, how does this impact the system? Damping?
Ideas, tales of woe, done it, simulated it?

The inductors don't necessarily store a lot of energy, you can use coupled inductors (ie. common mode chokes). Very low inductance during charge, very high inductance during discharge.

True that.
