RII micro keyboard - can you convert it to wired usb
« on: March 19, 2017, 01:42:36 pm »
I've got one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rii-X1-Mini-2-4GHz-Black-Wireless-Keyboard-with-Mouse-Touchpad-Remote-Control-/111821091071?hash=item1a090e70ff:g:snMAAOSwnHZYm7if

It charges using USB, but operates wirelessly using a small keyboard dongle that you plug in.

Has anyone taken one of these apart?  I would like to convert it to a USB wired keyboard.

I have one of these keyboards. I will take a look inside.

I'm not a RF/wireless guy, but one crazy thing comes to my mind. Would it work to wire the antennas of the keyboard and the dongle directly together, maybe with some sort of attenuator between? WiFi over wire so to speak  :o

Chipset is BEKO BK2433 2.4GHz Wireless SoC. The other chip is labled "EST ES928 B351G0837G3". Some sort of capacitive touch IC with I2C interface, or a microcontroller with these capabilities.

The BK2433 in QFN-56 has no USB interface. There is an BK2423 is QFN-24 with USB interface. But the chip must be configured for that, I don't think that it magically apears as a USB keyboard when connected.

Last image.

Edit:
The header footprint J4 is VDD, GND, VPP_PROG, MISO, MOSI, SCK, CS. The 8th pin I could not find. Could be unconnected or on an inner layer. And the chipset is one time programmable.

You always have the option of figuring out the key matrix and connecting your own USB microcontroller. There's various keyboard firmwares floating around on the Internet that AFAIK you just need to give it the keymap and they'll work.

Yes, that would be the obvious DIY tinkering method. If the OP realy want to convert this keyboard, that is the way to go. But would it be worth the effort?

Haven't looked on Ebay. But I'm pretty sure that there are readily available keyboards with USB in this form fatctor.

Btw, I use my RII keyboard for my raspberry. For doing quick things it's ok, but for longer use I find them a PITA to type with them. And the function keys only goes up to F8.

Keyboard error: Press F1 to continue.

Put the dongle inside the keyboard and wire it to the USB connector.
