Actually, I would like the new one to be red, or even black but even if it's green I'll take it, a darker background will make it look really good, even dark green might work better.

The old one I do like it as well but I think the extra information in the new one makes it better.

BTW this is what the uRuler will be replacing.

My 20 year old Motorola ruler that somehow my daughter borrowed and broke and only returned this bit back.

Yeah I'm still using it even if it's a fragment. Now that she moved out to college I might go for a search for a bigger piece of it in her room.

Different colours and also offer the old rulers? Red, blue, green, black, purple (hopefully no trademark infringement from oshpark), White with black silkscreen? Can you do individual fixed funding goals to make different colours happen? Or just 5 one colour or 5 with all different colours?

Lady Ada's maybe smaller but it very good, in the right hands. Forum software needs masturbatory icon here. I got mine free earlier this year, probably why they are out of stock. That tends to happen when you give away the store.

Me too, I always get N-MOS, P-MOS, NPN and PNP contacts mixed up. Is there a nice menomic for where the drain, source, gate / base, emitter, collector are and where the arrow points. I know of NPN -> "never points in" but nothing that covers it all.

It seems to be a common misconception (which that ruler features) that you can look at the inside of a through-hole LED and identify the cathode as the side that has the big part of the metal leadframe that the LED die is sitting on. Although that is usually the case, it is not always the case - I've seen some batches of LEDs, rarely, where it isn't.

That has already been answered:

Reason why not is because it has to fit inside a standard envelop.

Waiting for another uRuler gold+black (not green) with EE calculator and  built-in  energy harvesting device like this  :o

Quote
Midé's Volture Piezoelectric Vibration Energy Harvesters convert mechanical vibrational energy into alternating electrical energy (AC). This AC is then electronically converted to DC, which can be used to drive a multitude of wireless applications or recharge a battery.

What about uruler 3.0?

You could optimize space (smaller logos, for example) and add template symbols ;)

Here's a bunch of examples...

Are there the original Altium files?

I would like to modify them with KiCad, try to add some stuff (logic probe? Not symbols? The symbols to draw? Suggestions welcome) and submit it here.

I may have issues, but I need to learn KiCad ASAP because I use Linux. I'm not going to use Windows or pirated OrCAD.

A little bit offtopic but does anyone know a (cheap) fab where I can order some selfmade rulers? A lot of cheap fab houses don't offer very good silk screen resolution and since that is key here i'd like to know what fab houses do offer high quality silk screen for a compedative price.

Ask for Photoimagable Ident, it is more expensive but much sharper than the inkjet or silkscreened ident used as standard.

What about making symbols be able to be used to draw them? I posted some images about it, I think.

Wow, I can't believe it's been 2 years since I did this v3 µRuler  :o
Guess I should get off my arse and do some more.
I'm just looking at it again and thoughts on the back side imperial scale. Do I need all those different scales? (might be confusing?), or will just two different ones be enough? If so, which ones?, I'm not a Yank so I don't really know what are the most used imperial scales
Other stuff to add/remove?

I am sure there are many opinions on this, but the only imperial scales I use with any frequency are tenths, eighths, quarters.  Sixteenths occasionally.  Thirty seconds and sixty fourths never.  Same for twentieths and fiftieths and hundredths.  When needing more accuracy a ruler isn't the tool and decimal fractions are the answer, even in Imperial units.  I have never seen a micrometer calibrated in 512ths or whatever, and most of the calipers which have fractional scales also have sensible decimal scales.

I would consider extending the temperature conversion table to cover temperatures found worldwide.  -40C to 60C would cover ski areas and northern Europe, while getting most of the automobile in the sun temps.  The five deg C resolution is appropriate.  If you need tighter you go to your calculator or a bigger table.

Yep I was looking at that and thinking maybe it's a bit inadequate.
Many have said the Tantalum table is useless, and probably so, although I always forget the A/B/C/D package to metric conversions.

Yep, I was thinking of dropping the 64th and 50th as they are too small and maybe the the 0.5mm as well, as they are all a bit fine.
The 16th scale obviosuly handled the 1/4 and 1/8 as well.

As a mostly metric animal, I think 20ths of an inch are occasionally useful, I think you may as well keep them there (at the very least, as the little minor ticks). I must point out that there are two separate sections of the ruler there marked "1/10" and "1/20", but they look identical. It's obvious that tenths are the big ticks and 1/20 are the small ticks, but it still irks me that they're labelled as if to imply that the two sections are different in some way.

I'd be very keen to keep the 32nds. So I guess I'm suggesting, drop the 1/50, and drop the 1/64. At least that's symmetrical, one off each side.

I really like the design in the 1/32 section, with the ticks of 3 different lengths -- there is some argument perhaps for just extending this along the entire ruler?

Finer than finer isn't needed, in analog meters was quite acceptable to use up to 1/10th of a division, and good luck to fine a pencil of 1/10th of a mm to write with.

Resistance of a square could be useful along the copper thickness.

The things on the German ruler, and to some extent Dave's, would be better served printed single sided on acetate (or a more modern equivalent).  Easier to lay the footprints over the top of a PCB to see what size they are.  Maybe the ultimate version would have several, pinned together at one end like a set of feeler gauges.  That would free up more area to include all the good ideas that everyone has come up with.  And to do things like showing voltage spacings physically, so you could put the ruler over a board and see directly what voltages were supportable.

It would help in resolving a fundamental conflict with this ruler, which is trying to be two things - a measuring device and a pocket reference.

Other stuff to add/remove?

Wavelength in vacuum along the ruler. On the other hand on a 20cm ruler the first tick would be at 1.5GHz. I know what you need: a longer ruler ;-) Anyways, when it comes to tables (which consume a lot of space unfortunately), frequency and time vs wavelength would be nice.

Tables are easy to print on paper or to view on a monitor. I think most practical for such a ruler are different pad sizes, distances, foot prints, Rack Unit heigts, drill sizes for bolts and clearance for nuts, ... that sort of thing.

Or embed a button cell and some different color LEDs with known wavelengths. :scared:

I don't understand PCB rules covered in PCB footprints, what real use are they?

To have a reference of the real world scale after being working on a scaleless IDE in a monitor or digital datasheet, etc. At least that's for me. I check every once in a while to a real part to realize the actual scale I'm working on.

I have the ADAfruit  ruler and it has a good assortment of footprints. It is somewhat useful when etching your own boards at home to have a professional made board to compare with. The thing I use the most are the hole table/ wire gauge and your existing ruler is  more comprehensive in that regard. Selfishly I would ask you not to include footprints as I already have the Adafruit for that. I do want to order something close to your last ruler so get busy making them! (please!) vox populi has spoken!

Dave, I'm currently studing electronics and I suggested to my teacher to give one of your uRuler 3 to each student at the end of first year, he thought it was a great idea and asked how much would 150pcs cost?

Hey Dave!  Love your videos. I have learned so much watching them.  I used to be a Broadcast TV designer, but now I just work on electronics as a hobby. How do I go about purchasing one of these rulers?

Good question...
I should get off my arse this year.
The question is who to use to manufacture them this time around?

Ooh yay! I'm setting up my little lab finally, so I'd be glad to pick up a ruler or three.

Dave,
How about making it longer than 12 inches, maybe 15 or 18. Also add the 0.3" spacing for through hole use.

Regards,
Sam
