SK6812 - 2020 orientation - Anyone use?
« on: February 05, 2022, 09:03:43 pm »
What the heck is with these SK6812, 2020 packages. Talk about being the most assembly unfriendly package in the world.

As far as I can tell; the package is square - so can't figure out orientation from that.

There appears to be a small triangle point to on of the pads; but they are very small and on the bottom side of the package.
There does not appear to be a top side mark at all.

The "datasheet" provided by the aliexpress vendor doesn't provide enough detail to figure out what the triangle is indicating.

Is it pin 1? Is it Pin 3?

Does anyone know for sure? Have you built a project with this LEDs so have first hand knowledge?

I figured it out and verified the pinout with a small Arduino program.

Basically; the Triangle points to Pin 1 or VDD.
I figured this out by using a 6x microscope and looking for the die in the package.

The LEDs I received appear to be an equilvalent to:
http://www.normandled.com/upload/202003/SK6812-EC20%20LED%20Datasheet.pdf
which has the DIE in the top between pins 3 and 4.
See top view pp 4.

Now that I'm looking at this datasheet (and not the one the seller provides on their page) it clearly shows pin number on the "botoom" view which makes it easier. Using the botoom view in concert with the pin configuration makes it legible.

Keep in mind; don't fall for the trap I did... I had used Sparkfun's LED library with a 2020 Neopixel footprint in my PCB design. These leds do not directly fit the sparkfun library. I think I can make it work by rotating the LED; but I'm going to have to be careful in triple verify.

Finally; for those using FastLED.io's library; this LED seems to bet GRB or:
FastLED.addLeds<SK6812, DATA_PIN, GRB>(leds, NUM_LEDS);
