Part Search 7 Segment Display
« on: June 19, 2019, 09:18:05 pm »
Hi there , i was getting through my BOM ordering stuff for my project when i got to the 7 segment displays.

I thought i would easily find .4 inch 7 segment displays but boy am was i wrong.

The display i used for my schematic (and then my board) is this puppy : HDSP-F103 10 mm Common Cathode Right Hand Decimal.

The driver used to drive the display is the classic CD4543. It is configured for common cathode displays on the board.

The problem surfaced when i tried searching for a 0.4 inch or 10.16 mm digit size displays. As it turns out they aren't popular , all i could find were 0.56 inch or 14.2 mm displays.

The only seller i could find with displays similar to what i want was this one but the shipping cost is a bit much : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32584820200.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.33.32e97ccdiJf1NV&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0%2Csearchweb201602_7_10065_10068_319_10059_10884_317_10887_10696_321_322_10084_453_10083_454_10103_10618_10304_10307_10820_10821_537_10302_536%2Csearchweb201603_55%2CppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=f809c3f4-7f94-4dff-ab54-10997e2518a9-5&algo_pvid=f809c3f4-7f94-4dff-ab54-10997e2518a9

So my question is : Could i use 0.36 inch displays that are readily available or should i bite the bullet and order the 0.39 inch ones i found ? (I cannot go with the popular 0.56 inch ones because of space restrictions on my pcb design.

Anyway thank you and i hope we have a nice talk about these little monsters...

Can you get the size you want in dual, triple, or quad character arrangements?  Are there old stock 0.4" displays that you can get enough quantity of to be satisfied for your project?

The easy option is the 0.36" displays, but I'd probably order a few and see if they're big enough for your liking before making a larger purchase if you need volume.

Thank you for your reply. I do not require volume just to save time (the 30 days from china waiting period  :P) The 2 or 3 digit ones wont be possible due to my pcb connections (wasteful but i wanted every display to be driven by its own IC). I could not find 0.4" displays anywhere (ebay , aliexpress , lcsc). I am currently leaning on buying 20 0.36" ones just to give it a try (smaller displays do not bother me i am worried about the pin pitch and if there will be problems mounting them on the board)

Vishay or Sharp:

http://www.vishay.com/displays/seven-segment-display/

the table says "Package" = 10 mm, but they mean digit size.

Digikey.. (the exact one you said you couldn't find HDSP-F103 ?
https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/broadcom-limited/HDSP-F103/516-1225-5-ND/637489
But digikey is 4 times the price of some Jamaco options below.

Jamaco... lots of 0.4 options. (i've not checked footprint size, common A/K etc..  Just 0.4)

Well thanks guys for the help. I have been avoiding buying from places outside the EU (besides china) due to shipping cost and customs.
Edit : Sorry for the trouble i should have mentioned it in the first post.

i'm confused then.
your original aliexpress link was within your budget.
Did you maybe miss that the price is per lot and 1 lot is 10 pieces?

So you need 3 lots to get 30 units. That's $3
Then for 3 lots the shipping is $5
So total US$8
Which is 7.12 Euro

Unless you mean that you want fast EMS shipping or something?
EMS ends up being around 18.3 eur for 30

My problem was not the price. I had doubts about the size because the listed displays were 0.39" while the ones i am looking for are 0.4" (i do not know if they will fit correctly)

I'd be shocked if tolerances are so tight that 1/100th of an inch matters. Either way they're so cheap you could buy a few and try them.

Size would only matter if you're matching other displays, the size they're advertising is the size of the digit, not the size of the package or the PCB pins - there are usually technical drawings for this, but I think most of these sized displays will be standard DIP pin spacing and arrangement.  Though there can be some variation in pinout and the common cathode vs. common anode to make sure match your requirements.
