Replacing a lost remote control for a Denon volume control
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:23:38 am »
Hi Guys,

After it seems I was finally able to fix the Denon DRA335 amp. It has a motorized volume pot by ALPS (and old model). I don't have the remote but would like to use that option. I'm a complete noob when it comes to remote controls, so I'm going to need some help here.

How do I know what remote I can use, and what exactly do I need to do to make it work?

I couldn't find the schematics of the DRA335, but I did find the one of the DRA435 (which is almost the same, I've used it when repairing the amp), it can be downloaded here:

Thank you.

Have you just tried searching for it on ebay?

You should attach files rather than uploading them to a file sharing site, click on additional options, choose, select the file and click open.

I've looked at the schematic but it would take me months to fully understand it. The remote control section seems to be in IU-2346 (top right hand site of the schematic). What looks like the IR receive IC isn't labelled and the decoder IC TMP67P670 doesn't appear in a Google search.

I didn't actually upload it to that site, I found it there. I've attached it to this post.

There is a remote on eBay that's supposed to fit, but it costs more than what the amp cost me :)

What do I need to know about the amp so I'll be able to make a remote control work with it?

A possible solution is a universal remote but check if it has any codes for Denon, as they are usually similar for other products in their line, it usually has most common codes built it.  If this works end of story.  If you know anyone with a remote, you can also copy the command codes with a trainable universal remote.

looks like its going to be more expensive than I thought it would. So I'll just let that one slide for now.

I have another project or two lined up so I'll deal with them first.

You can get cheaper universal remotes than that - shop around.

It wouldn't be so bad, if you could borrow a remote for it because it shouldn't be to hard to reverse engineer the codes, the trouble is not having a remote to clone. The schematic isn't much help because it doesn't describe how the remote works and the receiver and decoder ICs seem to be custom parts.

Another option would be to just replace the volume control circuitry entirely. Not quite ideal, but if you're really gunning for wireless volume on a budget its an option. There are quite a number of diy remote volume kits/schematics on the net, and since you already have a nice Alps motorized volume knob, you're all set.

I don't really need a remote control, just thought it'll be nice to have one. But since the amp was about 25$ (and quite a few hours to fix), I don't want to spend too much money on it.

Its seems like a nice amp though. So I'll probably give it a listen during the next week or so, and if it sounds nice I'll try replacing the coupling caps and perhaps a few more parts (the coupling caps aren't that good, a few of them are quite old electrolytic).

Well Denon is quite a respected brand in audio circles, so if you update the electro's you might end up with a real gem in terms of an integrated amp. Hell u could find urself an old turntable and rock out to some vinyl records since it has a phono stage input

I've actually had two old turntables which I've ended up giving as a gift to some friends who wanted to get into vinyl.

I also have another gem which I believe is even better, a Kenwood KA-7100. Its a great sounding amp which I plan to work on (some new parts), but at the moment I don't feel like I know the amp well enough to be able to make it the best it can be. Maybe in another year or two :)
