PCF8591 Obsolete
« on: November 19, 2019, 11:43:39 pm »
I want to an AD DA converter for my Raspberry Pi.  The PCF8591 chip was popular a couple of RP generations ago.

Today, some parts suppliers claim that the PCF8591 AD DA Converter chip is obsolete.  The DIP version sells at high prices, if I can find it at all.  Does anyone know what chip is meant to replace this I2C IC?   :-//

It's been discontinued for over 10 years, last order date was 31 Mar 2009.

Mostly nobody is making DIP ICs anymore. The SOIC version is still available if you want an equivalent. If you must have through hole, you will probably need to get a separate DAC and ADC. The only cheap converters I can find are SPI, not I2C as well.

If you want to breadboard with it, just get the SO16 version and solder it on a DIP16 adapter PCB. Someone is probably manufacturing this, too.
