PCIe cellular modem recommendations?
« on: February 27, 2022, 01:20:20 am »
I'm toying around with a potential product, and I want to add a 4G cellular modem to it. Does anybody have any recommendations for a good PCIe cellular modem module? I'm looking for something that supports 4G (or LTE or HSPA+), has a PCIe interface, and has good Linux support. My CPU's BSP is on the 5.10 LTS kernel.

What's the point to require PCIe interface? Get USB cellular modem instead. If out of USB ports - use PCIe USB card.

Target device is an aarch64 SoC. USB is all booked up, but the PCIe lanes are available. I figure that I can put an M.2 cellular module on there, if I can find a good one.

If you've done anything similar, module recommendations would be much appreciated!

Pick one of Quectel's devices. Plenty with PCIe connections.

Sorry, no. They might use MiniPCIe or M.2 form factor and slots. But they don't actually use the PCIe lanes. The MiniPCIe and M.2 standards also include USB 2.0 D+/D- lines, and you can even get USB 3.0 instead of PCIe (same pins).

There are no modems that actually use PCIe. If you must use PCIe you will need ether an USB host controller or an high-speed PCIe UART.

So what? OP asked for LTE or HSPA+ which is well within range of USB 2.0 throughput.
