150V Boost converter with LM2588 (Choke vs transformer)
« on: May 16, 2016, 08:22:42 pm »
I'm working on a 150V boost converter. I want to test a design using the LM2588 flyback regulator from TI and I have a question regarding the transformer. I've never actually designed anything using one so bear with me.

I was wondering if I could substitute a choke instead of the transformer and flip the polarity of the second coil to agree with the output current flow of the circuit.  Is this correct?

Choke I want to use

If you want to stick with the LM2588 you will have to stick with a transformer. The internal switch of that part is only rated for 60V.

In a boost converter you need a switch equal to the output voltage, plus some margin. So you are looking at a 200-250V switch.

Do you have a suggestion for the controller? A transformer would be way too big for this application.

I'm using a very high estimation for the output current. I only really need a couple milliamps on the output.

TI's webbench seems to be pushing me towards the LM258X series controllers. I wanted to use the LM3478 but it doesn't seem to handle the boost from 5 to 150V.

You need to use something with an external switch like this: http://www.linear.com/product/LT3757
