I have got a ps5 for repair, which suffers from coil whine.

First I thought it was inside the power supply, but it was not. The noise was coming from a component on the motherboard.

I have made a video with sound about it, so that you can hear it : https://youtu.be/OmLN_op1eQo

I found out that it is very hard, with my ears, to find the root cause of this sound, so I bought a MAX9814 Electret Microphone Amplifier and connected the output to my Rigol DS1054 oscilloscope, but however, the sound is too weak.

Does somebody know, how to find the root cause for this sound ? Are the other sensitive microphones on the markert with low noise levels, which I can use for this purpose.

Any help will be very much appreciate, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Kind regards,

Ed

Use a straw or rolled-up piece of paper to listen directionally.

Put a finger on suspect components and see if the sound stops.

Note that ceramic capacitors can also make noise.
