Quality power supply male/female connectors!
« on: December 10, 2019, 09:13:23 pm »
DC plugs ok but what if you want higher quality? What would you use? Have some low volume stuff who needs some solidity, feel of real quality without the "gold plated HIFI blingy" besides being actually quality without being expensive and difficult to source! Its for customers who value quality without knowing the details.

Was thinking about GX12 or XLR as they are lockable , but i havent seen any PCB mounted GX12 but there are XLR for PCB. Its for DC or AC 20V/4A so what would you use? Any favorites? I try to stay away from Telecom DC/AC connectors as they are ugly and quite expensive.

The feel and surface connectivity is splendid with GX's who uses splinted male pins.

Personally I would stay away from GX12, just because there is so much utter junk out there in that format.

Lemo if you can afford it, quite excellent and really has the quality feel (Stay away from the fakes, mostly junk), or Hirose (Avoid the plastic ones).

Souriau UTS are nice as plastic connectors go, and (if you buy the right bits) are waterproof even when unmated which may or may not matter.

XLR has enough 'expected uses' that I would be a bit careful, but it depends on your market.

Even the ebay GX12 and GX16 connectors have been good for me. I haven't been able to locate them elsewhere though. They aren't on LCSC, Digikey or Element14.

GX12, while having solid looking pins, typically have simple bent sheet metal contacts in the sockets.

I think XLR contacts are typically rated at around 15A.

Another good lockable option, although physically bigger and higher rated, are Neutrik Speakon or Powercon types.
Best Regards, Chris

Actually Farnell carries Lemo, Hirose, and some, i assume Chinese made, GX's like eg :1280759,1280759 as the surface finnish is a distant cry from the Japanese Sanwa 2 pole i have on my desk is just of superb quality and feel using lathed male/female pins/receptors. Hmm maybe its a GX16 as shell size is 16mm!?

Lemo is very nice design but the pricing is also very high. Neat dual male-female in same connector solutions!

Id like to try to stay away from "heavy duty" industrial look and design for a sober one.

Regarding Chinese GX el cheapo mentioned previously, the difference seams to be Chinese GX is zink molded while
quality like Sanwa Denki etc is entirely lathed in steel, nut ,disk, housing, case, etc then its all chromed.

I have always found the nicest power connectors for low voltage to be a regular DB9. Multiple pins connected in parallel as needed for higher current.
