Question on using to similar Switchmodes output wired in series...

(1/1)

peteb2:
I know doing it’s not a best practice & some makers state in their datasheet the procedure to use series connections, or don’t as the situation goes... In the climate of having spare time to hand I’m finishing off projects while using up pieces & parts to hand.

I have a main circuit that needs a diet of ordinary regulated 12Vdc but we also have to run a couple of fans that sadly are both 24V. I have two identical 12V XP ECS100US12 SMPS units both capable of 8.3A, way beyond what will ever be needed current wise.

The fans are switched by the circuit using a good ole TP122 Darlington. The XP datasheet makes no reference to series connecting their ECS devices.

The fans are gutless for airflow on 12V so just wondering if I am up for a dummy award if I series the XP modules for the fan 24V only but take the o/p from one XP module for supply the main circuit? Of course I need to watch out on 0V connects & references to GND for electrical safety...

Scratch that previous meandering description. All sorted... i've used one 12V psu to supply the circuit and the 2nd unit now has a simple dc boost converter to make 24V at around 300mA for the two fans.

All good...
