Remote for home receiver acting strangely
« on: June 29, 2019, 02:08:44 am »
My remote or maybe it's the receiver(Denon 1801 AVR), but

sometimes it turns on the radio and changes the volume ok,

or else I have to get within 2 feet for it to work.

The batteries for the remote are are at the proper voltage.

The keypad and the circuit board have been cleaned.

The only thing that has changed in the last month has been the addition of a dipole antenna to pull in stations for the FM radio part.

But it is an unpowered antenna.

Anything else I can check?

Thanks,
             Andy

Electrolytic capacitor(s) in the remote may be degraded. Check or just replace. IR led is next in the list to check/replace. Less likely problem - degraded electrolytic capacitors in the receiver 5v supply of IR receiver

Or  maybe the rubber keypad keys even if they are cleaned may have lost its contact properties ...

Does it stop working properly when you turn ON lights in the room?

It works ok when 3 CFLs are on. They are within 8 -> 12 feet of the radio.

Now it is working ok.

Not sure what it is called, but when the radio is turned on or off, I hear a clicking sound.

Maybe some kind of relay?

I am happy that the radio works ok, even if it is occasionally cattywonkus. :-)

It works ok when 3 CFLs are on. They are within 8 -> 12 feet of the radio.

CFLs are notorious for emitting IR noise, especially when they are cold.

I had the exact same problem few years back, my TV remote would usually work fine, but sometimes it's range was very short.

I eventually determined that it was happening within 10 or so minutes of turning the lights on. The CFLs when cold were emitting huge amounts of IR. After they had been on for a few minutes they would settle down and everything was ok.  Now that I've switched to LEDs I don't have the issue.

Next time it happens, try turning the lights off.

thanks for the info.

I have some led bulbs. May switch them out.

They don't get hot like CFLs.
