Touchscreen Displays and Manufacturers for SBC/SOM
« on: March 01, 2021, 08:37:42 pm »

Greetings,

New member here so... "Hello World".

I come from the NxM character display world, and have been asked to look into replacing a 4x20 character display and membrane keypad with a touchscreen display.

A SBC/SOM solution we are considering runs Linux and has HDMI and USB support. So I have been "Googling" HDMI Touchscreens with mixed results.

Waveshare Electronics (www.waveshare.com) seems to have some nice solutions, but seems to target hobbyists. Mouser/Digikey/Avnet/Arrow do not seem to stock their displays.

Being a commercial project, supply chain, MTBF, support, production lifetime commitment are all important, and perhaps not so much to hobbyists.

I would appreciate any constructive advice.

for hmi devices

You can find many companies,  most china based,  we use at our job  Dwin hmi displays (since 2008, still available), they have some clones branding too

The software(s) are relatively easy to work with, graphical interface, icons, bitmaps  etc ...  we communicate up to 921600 bauds with them,  can be set down to 9600 bauds,, we have a slave board with avr device on them, can be used as plc controllers  etc ...

Infos and code snippets are easier to find on their china websites, (google translation help)  with their english site,  it is not easy ...

Really depend of your needs

my 2 cents suggestions,   not affiliated with DWIN

Go to Alibaba.com and search for "HDMI Touch Display".

Many will try to get you to customize the display which will often involve some tooling fee + MOQ volume to get started. In our opinion, better to work with something that is already tooled ('paid by another past customer' hint, hint) and ideally continue to camp onto their volume.

There are far too many options for such items but it can be rewarding once you find the proper fit. The HK trade fairs (perhaps virtual) next month will have tons of such suppliers. For our embedded project, we are attempting to make use of iphone / ipad style displays but that is another story in itself.

You can also consider HDMI to MIPI bridge boards + capacitive touch controllers that operate with I2C, SPI, USB and then make use of this bridge board for your Linux box. The HDMI to MIPI will be transparent and should be relatively straightforward to monitor the touch action from the display.

Another suggestion, load up the Alibaba app and post a RFQ for "HDMI Touch Display" and your mailbox will be flooded with feedback within hours of their (China) opening tomorrow.

How do you address the commitment to product production lifetimes with this approach?

I dont know a company who will offer 'lifetime'  as you want ...  they will offer maybe a 10 years  availability ??  technology evolve pretty fast

As an example

The DWIN hmi panels we uses date back to almost 8 years, we did not receive an EOL,  but i did saw technology changes on the panels, they still have compatibilities in the coding with minor changes ...

what are the volume involved ??

We are currently redesiging a new board interface, the sharps lcd + touch screen are phasing out,  we managed to sell aroud 500 machines with them

Now the problem we have is the panel thickness, it's almost twice as thick ...

Just saying that nothing last forever

Things like this may happen, you'll have to maintain a good inventory

Thanks,

I meant 10 year commitment.

If I try to "ideally continue to camp onto their volume", then when the main customer discontinues production of their product, I worry the part wouldn't be a priority to continue production for our poultry 3000 units a year.

Those are decent volumes. Most will build you custom display assemblies @ 1k MOQ. Highly suggest for you to start dialog with some of the manufacturers overseas and share your requirements. Shout back if you need any leads - bound to have some past emails from the trade fairs. There are always aisles of such vendors who can offer you these products.

Does your SBC only support HDMI for display?  Many also support MIPI or parallel connections, and if yours does as well then that would expand your options and may also be easier to integrate into your project.

You might check https://www.buydisplay.com/ if you haven't already, they've been around a while, have a nice selection of stock displays, and claim a commitment to long-term availability, although they don't make any specific guarantees.  Not sure if they'd be willing to do a custom job at your quantity but worth inquiring, and certainly worth looking at for proof of concept/prototype parts.
