Title: Replace PS transformer with Switched supply?
Post by: rodcastler on April 07, 2014, 04:30:29 pm
My power supply is kind of heavy, and I happen to have a fine switching Allen Bradley fixed 24V/8A power supply lying around as well.

Would it be feasible to replace the heavy AC 30V/5A transformer with the lightweight DC 24V/8A one inside my Korad PS?  What are the implications?

Note: I assume it's not a direct replacement since for a start one is AC the other one is DC, one is 30V the other one is 24V, and I also haven't checked if the transformer has several taps, and all that. But the thing is that I wouldn't mind to trade weight for having the PS to go only up to 24V.

Adjustable supplies usually have multi-tap transformers so that they don't have to dissipate too much power in the pass transistors at low operating voltage.  If you connect a fixed supply it will probably overheat.
