Resin Splice On Shielded Cable?
« on: August 05, 2020, 01:46:06 pm »
I have a cable intended to go underwater that I want to wye-off into 2 different whips near its end.  The cable consists of 5 individually shielded pairs (2 tiny motors and 1 resolver)

My first thought was to use a resin splice similar to this product from 3M:

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Scotchcast-Wye-Resin-Splice-kit-82-B1N-1-5-kV-Non-Shielded-10-Case/?N=5002385+3291144871&rt=rud

However the very first bullet on the webpage states that it is for unshielded cables only. Can anybody say why this is?

Any other products out there that would be appropriate to splice 3 underwater cables together that can be done in house without any super specialized equipment?  I only intend on making 2 such connections so farming it out somewhere might not be very cost-effective however I haven't gotten far enough to seriously look into that yet.

I have used similar stuf for ROV thethers and umbilicals. The thing about screens is that the kit proably dont come with the bits to run it through the splice. if the screen is copper mesh just solder the mesh together end your probably good if the signals running through them are not tcritical for noise. If noise is critial get some coppper mesh on roll and wrap this around the wires before assambling the shell and pouring the potting.
