| Reusing BGAs from prototypes? |
| (1/2) > >> |
| stmdude:
I've started amassing a few prototype boards (of my own) with CPU+DDR3 chips on them. Just over $20 in components right there, never to be used again. Or? Would I be shooting myself in the foot (yield-wise) by removing them, cleaning, reballing and re-using ? Just to be clear, since "reballing" is a dirty word on this forum. I'm _not_ trying to repair any chips. The chips and boards work fine. I just want to re-use the chips on a newer revision of the PCBs. |

Nothing bad on the technical side of things, if we are talking about a prototype. It all depends on how much you do value your time. If you work at, e.g. 100$/hour and it takes two hours to remove the BGAs and reball them, you just spent 200$. If the chips are worth more than that (or if your time is worth less), go for it. |

It can be good practice, it all depends on your goals, how much time you have, how much value you place on your time and how much you enjoy doing this sort of work. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to reuse the parts if I had a good use for them. |

Yes, good for practising, but extremely time-consuming. As said above - mostly depends on how much you value your own time. |

Oven with a spring lift. Quite a resonable process. Personally i perfer doign it in the vapour phase. But it does mean another heating cycle. |
