Right angle rgb leds in smd
« on: November 15, 2013, 10:10:59 pm »
For a product i'm designing i need some medium power rgb led but the problem is that the direction of the light must be perpendicular from the board (sorry for the bad english..).
I only found this http://www.kingbrightusa.com/product.asp?catalog_name=LED&product_id=APFA3010SEEZGQBDC but is not very powerful and the price is a little too high.
I don't have experience in large quantity pcb manufacture and i would like to know if assembling the board (all smd part and on one side) with the smd led (expensive) is still cheaper than using a normal trough hole led (cheap) that someone should bend and solder.
Thanks for the help.

Physically bending and forming a lead on an LED is labor and that will cost you considerably (relatively speaking) - even if it didn't require custom bending, the fact it is thru-hole is another process and will add to assembly costs.

There are actually a lot of right angle LEDs both SMT and TH.  Are you looking for a color LED for indicator purposes?

I saw some nice Everlight ones in a demo kit the other week.

Can you point me some right angle rgb leds in smt? The ideal luminosity is more or less 1000 mcd.

Have you done a parametric search on Mouser or Digikey yet?

If it's a chip LED, perhaps you could stand it on its side to solder in place.

There are plenty of side-view SMD LEDs available.  Not so many in RGB, but they exist per my first post above.

Why don't you solder on the surface of your board a tht led, without bending the pins, just cut them. You might need to cut a free space for the led on the board.

Did you even bother to read the bit where he says high volume ? How exactly is the pick and place machine going to a) pick up a through hole component, and b) cut its legs off and place it on a board on its side  |O

Have you considered using light pipes?

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/optoelectronics/optics-leds-light-pipes/524541

They may not be easy to install with an automated process but you may be able to source some "snap-in" type, or press fit.. so you wouldn't have to solder anything and it wouldn't add a lot of time to assembly.
it costs a bit of money, but on the other hand you'd use some more common rgb leds, less expensive, easier to source etc....
