Self-protected battery current protection
« on: September 05, 2019, 03:04:18 pm »
Hello,

This is an ATEX project.

I'm working with a low voltage battery (2.4 to 4.5V).
The maximum absolute ratings all have to be over 7V and able to work in my battery voltage range

In order to protect my battery, this are my points of interrest :
– Overvoltage Detection (OVP)
– Charge Overcurrent Detection (OCC)
– Discharge Overcurrent Detection (OCD)
– Load Short-Circuit Detection (SCP)

The component bq297xx from Texas Instrument should work fine for most of my needs BUT I need it to be self-protected from short-circuit in order to be sure there will be none.

One way would be adding a resistor to its Vss to limit the short-circuit current but it lead to more and more difficulties in order to get it works.
Another would be to add a self-protected short-circuit protection device before the bq297xx that I cannot find.

My best lead was the LT6118 from Microchips but its minimal voltage is too low in order to add a resistor to its ground.

Is the own short-circuit of the protection devices something that someone else is caring about ?

Thanks for your responses.
