My Xytronic I68-3C soldering station has served me well for many years but, there is one thing that has always bugged me about the design. When plugged to the AC outlet, the transformer is always on even though the power switch is off. Opening up the unit, I see that the primary leads are connected directly to the AC cord. The secondaries are connected to the power switch which turns on the controller board. I don't see this station should be wired like this unless it's to avoid the cost of an AC rated switch. I am considering re-doing the whole switch assembly by using an AC rated switch, connect the hot line to the switch and solder the secondaries directly to the control board.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
