Slim ceiling downlights
« on: July 02, 2020, 06:02:46 pm »
hello, has anyone got experience with (very) slim ceiling downlights to use in bathroom and kitchen? I would like to avoid joists and noggins if at all possible. My ceilings are about 24mm thickness, so any lights that will fit in that space or less? How do these compare to the ordinary halogen/LED downlights?

I have some chinese made RCA branded LED downlights in my bathroom - only 10mm thick - they can be installed in a 24mm thick ceiling, provided there is space above the ceiling to take the wiring & LED driver, which is about a 50mm x 25mm x 25mm cube on a short fly lead.

The image below gives you an idea of what it looks like and also how it is secured - cut a circular hole, large enough to pass the body of the light, but smaller than the flange, fold the spring latches back and slip the lamp into the hole and push it until the flange seats against the ceiling - the latches will spring back and sit against the ceiling, securing the lamp in place.

Your concern about avoiding joists & noggins is unclear to me - these lamps are light enough that they do not need to be affixed to a joist or noggin, they can be fitted to suspended ceiling tiles with no additional support - if there is a joist or noggin where you wish to mount the lamp once there is sufficient space for the wiring and the mounting clips to clear the joist - maybe rotate the lamp so they are at right angles to the joist  - you should have no trouble.

I have half a dozen of these installed and in a two year period I have had one LED driver fail.
