Hi Everybody,
Where is a good place in Australia to purchase low volume quantities of SMD resistors and capacitors?
Some vendors I find online seem to indicate that I can purchase in multiples of 5... but most seem to want to sell me 150+ at a time... I only need a few of a couple of values... 0603 and 0805 sizes.

try these guys, there are in Australia and are reliable.

good luck getting individual components :-)

Thanks for that.... I don't might buying 5 or 10... but I'll never get through multiples of 100.
Has anyone had any experience with SMD "packs" bought via eBay?

Element 14 will sell you resistors in small volumes. Just look for the Multicomp brand ones (their in-house budget brand). Usually a minimum of 50, but they are less than 1cent each.
They've finished their free shipping trial, so now its $12.95 shipping per order, unless its over $45 in which case shipping is free.
Otherwise, Altronics will sell you packs of 10 for less than a dollar: http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=prod&grp=460 (http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=prod&grp=460)
I tend to just buy an entire reel if its a common value. Usually ends up being only $10 or so for a full reel of 5000.

It's actually cheaper to buy from E14 since it's 1c per resistor even at 1206 1/2W .

150 is an odd qty - note this is the MOQ for farnell/E14's re-reeling service, so any part code with an RL suffix will show this as MOQ - RL versions tend to get sprinkled randomly among search results.

The eBay packs are fine in my experience, and very good value for money. Just watch out that the values are correct - sometimes the guy writing the value on the back of the tape in pen doesn't mark them legibly, and occasionally they label the wrong value. Just check them with a multimeter and you can't go wrong.

I've bought both the 1206 and the 0805 resistor packages off ebay, and they've been fine. If it covers all the values you need it's a good option. Most of them are 5% tolerance (you can tell because they have 3 digit numbers on them. 301 = 300 ohm for example). 1% resistors will be labelled with 4 digits (3000 = 300 ohm).
The capacitor packs aren't bad either, but none of the actual caps will have markings, so you are relying on the labelling on each bag to be correct. You also have no idea what the real specs are in terms of tolerance, voltage and so on.

Buy from sureelectronics, the resistors are very close tolerance within one another.
