Choosing a TVS and ESD testing
« on: March 20, 2021, 04:55:17 pm »
Hi,
apart from the breakdown voltage rating, uni/bi-directional, how do you choose a TVS?
Only via the energy it can handle? If so how do you pick one for consumer devices?
The current rating is also given, how does that come into play to pick one?

Separate but related...
Also, when doing ESD testing for consumer electronics, do even the tests/standards (from the least to the most stringent) require the ESD gun to discharge into the pins of a connector? Or only on the connector metal shield (if present)?

If it requires to discharge into the pins too, is that only for connectors large enough where you can touch the pins or even in connectors like micro USB?

Thank you :)
