Another advantage to the cascode connection (base of upper transistor coupled, possibly through a capacitor, to the emitter of lower transistor) is that the base current IB1 of the input transistor is also modulated by VCB.  When that current flows through the source impedance, it imposes a voltage at the input which is a non-linear function of the input voltage.  Since that voltage actually exists at the input terminal, the non-linear distortion cannot be removed by negative feedback, which only changes the gain for the parasitic voltage.  The cascode with the upper transistor tries to keep VCB of the input transistor constant as the actual input voltage changes, thus reducing the unwanted change in input transistor base current.

A cascode is one way.  Another way is to add emitter degeneration.
