selfheat MAX31855
« on: October 29, 2013, 01:22:49 pm »
Hi

I have built a simple circuit with MAX31855 thermocouple amplifier. Comunication work well but chip heat itself fast to 45-47°C and still slowly gaining (readed from internal sensor) And by touch  chip and pcb around is really warm so its not bad reading. Its powered from 3.3V LDO(real voltage 3,26V), 0.1uF cap close to vcc used as well. I have no idea what is wrong any suggestions?

Thanks!

Well... it sounds to me like there is something wrong with the chip. It should only be dissipating single-digit milliwatts of power. It's supply current is rated to be less than 2mA and you're running it from 3.3V ... do the math. The chip has definitely suffered some kind of failure - maybe latch-up.
I have more incomplete projects than I have digits and toes.
