Test Benches
« on: January 12, 2014, 04:22:04 pm »
I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I made a couple quick test benches for some small breakout boards and modules. To create the test bench I cannibalized one of the boards, stuck headers on it and brought out all of the I/O to a microcontroller so I could run a quick exhaustive test.

My question is in regards to the connectors. Most of the connectors for these boards are standard 0.1" and are not soldered on after assembly. To test the boards I place the board-under-test on top of the cannibalized board and I have to hold it at an angle to get a good electrical connection. Does anyone know the name of a better test connector for this purpose? Perhaps one that tapers  or flares out like a banana plug connector?

What I have works, I just feel like there's a better way.

Look in the POMONA catalog. I believe they have something for that.

Yes, spring-loaded, gold plated (less oxidation, lower contact resistance) telescope pins, aka Pogo-Pins. See how Sparkfun does it, and does it, and does it again.

I can't remember where I saw this tip, but I use pogo pins as an ICSP connector to program micro controllers.  Super convenient!

Pogo pins.

Search eBay, there are plenty,  different shapes and good prices.
