If you need a Linear power supply let say 3-30volt 15amps both ajustible. That IC is easier / better today ?
Open up any commerciall power supply from manufacturers like Agilent, Xantrx, Sorensen, TTI , connor or other known instrument makers. Good luck finding an lm723....

Efficiency of a dead cow , switches slower than my grandma can knit and has extreme suicidal tendencies for various reasons.
That chip is crap. No short circuit , switches slo, lots of dissipation, is unstavle in various co ditions.
Grab a simpleswitcher or a switcher product from Ti, maxim, linear or ST.
