MC1466L. Where'd they go?

I have a bunch of MC1466L from when I was a kid (about 10 or 12yrs old.)  Looking at the datasheet now, I can only surmise that I took apart some pretty expensive kit. 

The MC1466L seems to be the ceramic version of a "Precision wide range voltage and current regulator".  It look really cool.  What happend to them?  I can't find new ones anywhere.  I'm looking to buy any, I'm just curious as to why they are no longer available? 

I also have a bunch of LM723CN. Are those the class of chip that surpassed the MC1466L?

LM317 does pretty much all the old one did, but better and with fewer external components required.

I know this doesn't bode well for my beloved MC34063, but the vast majority of "MC" chips are either in the "old crap" folder or the "severely obsolete shit" folder.

MC34063 will not go obsolete soon, way too many clones of it around, and so common as the converter chip in all car phone chargers.

If you need a Linear power supply let say 3-30volt 15amps both ajustible. That IC is easier / better today ?

15A linear? I'm going to go out on a limb and say "you don't".... And if you do, you've got one hell of a project on your hands, it shouldn't be too much more work to do it with an op amp.

I wish there were an equally cheap and convenient alternative with slightly better behavior. True PWM would be nice (with the ability for the duty cycle to drop very low - 34063 doesn't perform well under very light load), as well as perhaps a more efficient saturating MOSFET output. I know there are hundreds of chips like that, but none of them are as cheap...

Open up any commerciall power supply from manufacturers like Agilent, Xantrx, Sorensen, TTI , connor or other known instrument makers.  Good luck finding an lm723....

You can make far better regulation systems than that old clunker.

Same for the mc36xxx. Can we widlarize that and bury its ashes please ?
Efficiency of a dead cow , switches slower than my grandma can knit  and has extreme suicidal tendencies for various reasons.

That chip is crap. No short circuit , switches slo, lots of dissipation, is unstavle in various co ditions.

Grab a simpleswitcher or a switcher product from Ti, maxim, linear or ST.
