TOSHIBA : That's the way to to do it ...
« on: December 12, 2013, 08:57:09 am »
Hi,

I have a Toshiba laptop with a semi broken power jack that works intermittently.
When you move the power plug slightly it goes on and off.

Thinking that it would be a relatively easy task, I disassembled the laptop but when I removed the
motherboard I was for a surprise.  Have a look at the following photo of the power jack:

Toshiba Power Jack

That is the proper way to support a power jack!  Nice work Toshiba!
They thought, Ah, we forgot to properly support the jack and a Chinese guy just put his chewing
gum on top...   :)   (By the way, the motherboard is made in China and its of a Chinese brand as well.
"Han" something.)

Anyway, that thing is like cement now and the worst part is that it covers the pins of the IC and
on the left side its on top of some SMD resistors and capacitors!

(I have resoldered its pins just in case there was a crack in the solder but to no avail.)

Has anybody seen something similar?
Is there a safe way to remove that thing without removing the SMD parts as well...?

Thanks!

Ok, I used the 858 SMD rework station (I just received!) to heat it and I was able to remove it.
I am not sure that I will be able to remove the power jack as well though because the solder
has flown to the upper part of the motherboard as well!  Will it work if I use a solder sucking
tool from the bottom side of the motherboard?  Can I remove it with the 858?
What temperature shall I use?

Most of the modern Toshiba laptops I've seen use a power jack on the end of a pigtail that plugs into a small Molex-like socket.
Their biggest problem is the plastic that the jack slides into breaks and the jack falls inside the laptop.

It still works, except you just have to glue the jack in place.

Hanstar? Not the highest quality manufacturer..

Use the hot air to remove the jack, too. It'll take a while, be patient.

How do you define "quality"?
I work with the laptop motherboards on a daily basis, and HannStar boards are in almost every laptop that I open. Regardless of brand.

Hannstar just make the PCB, the actual design is done by one of the big OEMs like Compal/Inventec/Quanta. Very little of the unit is "made by Toshiab".

Ummm I disagree, they are just sub-contracted to make the PCB/Board, ALL Lenovo/IBM low to high end ThinkPad's are Hannstar.
Just as Foxconn is to Apple.

I don't think that's actually chewing gum!

Mine isn't, at least it's not marked as such.

And this is a recommendation?

Recommendation? I don't understand how that would be a recommendation.

What model is yours, every IBM/Lenovo thinkpad I have worked on has a Hanstarr mainboard and i've seen 90% of models as I repair them and do password recovery.

Explaining that Hannstar are fine because they're like Foxconn?

Good old R series :)

You should find a logo or Hannstar somewhere on that board

No it was more of an analogy, like nearly all products they are subcontracted to other manufacturers, Foxconn and Hannstar are the 2 main ones, no indication of quality using Foxconn as a reference, they all built to manufacturers specifications.

When I was at LG we built the iMac and Dell Monitors, PCB, Components etc, but they were far far better than LG's own products.

AMD don't even have their own fab, they just design CPU's, they are made anywhere.

Neutered T series. :( Literally the same PCB as a T61, they just didn't populate all of it.

I shall look next time I strip it.. which will probably be the last time that board is inside it, there's a possible Sandy Bridge capable replacement coming.

Mm. Well, I haven't been overly impressed by the quality of anything I've noted as being Hannstar manufactured. Certainly not their TVs and monitors, and Toshiba laptops belong in a skip..

I put a picture above, yes similar to T61, I love the X series myself and have lots of them.

Foxconn own products are cheap and nasty, Hannstar displays, Hanns-G/Hannspree monitors etc arn't the best, but they make a heck of a lot of stuff for high end laptops, that Toshiba must be a real Toshiba as a lot are re-badged Acer or some other low end stuff for the retail market, HP are a bugger for this! a lot of HP gear even says Designed by HP on the bottom or made under licence.

Finally I did not take the risk to remove the crappy power jack, but because there was a lot of
space in this laptop, I installed a brand new high quality power jack just next to the old one.
Problem solved!  :)

Brand names are not a good indicator of quality lately...

Thanks guys!
