Connector identification, HP printer m452dn
« on: April 17, 2020, 04:01:43 am »
The attached photo shows the connector in question. I've been through digikey for a couple hours now looking through the rectangular connectors with a 1 row 7 position filter but found nothing. My best guess for its use is as a programming/debugging port. I'm going to start having a play with printers in an effort to save people money on these things. It's a shame the way printer manufacturers do business.

Can anyone identify the connector type and possible pinout? It's located underneath the printer where I nearly missed it. Notice the keying to the top, left and right of the pins.

My assumption is that it's some JTAG or serial port for an embedded micro but I'd like to find a connector first to sniff at signals. I'd rather not tear the thing down either if I don't have to; I hate toner and it's got way too many parts to keep track of.

Also, if anyone has links to resources about pre-existing REing work done on printers I'd be very grateful. Searching, even with ad blocking plugins, leads me straight back to the manufacturers and using a '-site:hp something something dot com' modifier yields very little.

Thank you.

Sorry, I cannot tell you what the connector is, but I can tell you what it is used for.
It is the connector that mates with the optional expansion paper tray.
It may or may not have any intelligent comms.
More likely just a connector to the motors and sensors in the paper tray.

Here is the document on how to physically install the paper tray.
It doesn't specifically mention the connector, but the pictures imply a connector riser sticking up in some drawings.

Where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

Thank you for that info. I saw it and instantly my mind went to production programming. I guess the next step is a tear down. :palm:
