Fighting planned obsolecense (Rapairing my TV)
« on: October 07, 2013, 04:51:19 am »
So, my family was watching a movie via HDMI and suddenly this happened, colors went wrong and they stay like this no matter the video mode of the screen, im currently studying Electronics engineering and i already have a decent electronics lab (thanks to daves video), however i havent actually put hands on something this big,

For starters and hoping anyone here can give me a lead what is going on with this TV?

I have already looked using google for any kind of service manual however i have found nothing so im planning to tear it down and see if i can find out whats wrong on sight, and use the osciloscope probes in every IC (Vcc- and Outs) i can find (using datasheets of course) however i would like to see if anyone here can give me any advice to do this,

I have done some repairs but none of them this big, I have seen the many teardowns and fix videos from dave so i feel quite confident to get my hands dirty with this, however if anyone here has ANY kind of advice i will glady take it

The TV is a BRAVIA BX45 also the TV has no guarantee so the worst can happen is me salvaging every single thing inside of it

the 1st picture is a picture of the tv while changing the channel and the 2nd its in the actual chanel, you can see the color blue on the bottom of the screen and a color yellow on the mid of the screen, the top of the screen is fine, however the bottom and middle are phased out and you cant actually see the pictures but as i said phased out

Have you checked to see if it works for something like an Xbox to see if the TV is the problem?  It looks like it is the TV but I had something like this a long time ago and it turned out to be the Cable box or set top box (whatever it's called).

Sony is very good about making service manuals available for their products. You can order one through their spare parts distributors; you'll want this manual.

You find that most of the important chips were made by Sony and have proprietary part numbers; no datasheets are available for them.

Good luck with your repair project!

yes, as i said this happens no matter what video mode its set, so its most likely a hardware problem, i already plugged/unplugged  the PC via HDMI however the color scheme stays like that no matter what i do or even if its rebooted so im like about to tear this thing down however it would be a great help if anyone with insight of the problem could advice something

Most likely the usual bad caps in the power supply, the semiconductors rarely go bad, and is usually the result of failed caps.

How old is the TV and what country are you in? You might still have a warranty claim.

it fairly new however i got it for free in a raffle at work 1-2 years ago so unless sony products have guarantee by serial number i might give it a try, but i wonder... i know dell has this serial number guarantees they even let you put your serial number in their webpage to see if you still have it, i dont know about sony tho, i might look for it tomorrow in the morning since its already a bit late here, i live in mexico btw

If its a capacitor, shouldnt the tv just like... not turn on?, dont get me wrong if its a bad cap i got this, however i dont see how a bad cap can alter the image colors like this,

Lets hope its a Cap tho

  • If it still has a warranty, why own it?

Find a service manual and get on the badcaps forums, they're an amazing bunch!

Source: Recently modded a pair of badly designed inverters and got myself a free ($6.82) TV based solely on info found on that forum.
