Trying to ID flash/eeprom? chip
« on: November 16, 2019, 10:31:23 pm »
Hello all,
I hope this is the correct section, sorry if it isn't. I am trying to identify the chip shown in the attached picture, sorry the picture isn't great but the chip is tiny. The main marking is ATH236 (ATMLH236)? I think it's an atmel chip something like this maybe http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/devicedoc/Atmel-8779-SEEPROM-AT24HC02C-Datasheet.pdf but I am not sure.

I'd like to try and read, replicate or maybe rewrite it if possible, but hard without knowing what it is or the pinout etc.

It's used to limit how many minutes I can operate a machine until I have to buy another pack of consumables (hardware DRM!) it's so wasteful as I have plenty of consumables left that I cannot use (it's a cd/dvd cleaning machine for those wondering). Not to mention the price of consumables have gone up 40% since I bought the machine, bypassing the chip won't change anything, I'll still have to buy them but at least I'll be able to use up all of the compound etc before having the pay out again.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Only half kidding that "Dodgy Technology" might have been a good place for it. ;)

AT24C02C, standard 256x8 I2C serial EEPROM, no special features like serial numbers or ID bytes or crypto or anything like that. Your choice of I2C reading/writing tool should work. For the ridiculous margins involved, I'd expect them to have spent some time on countermeasures, so I can't promise that "refilling" the key wouldn't brick the whole system.

I just opened up two more of these dongles / chips one is ATH448 the other is ATH552 so all three are different so far.
