TSOP32, flash memory.
« on: February 06, 2021, 10:29:39 am »

Hi.

In one of my designs I am going to replace a 27C010 eprom with a SST39SF010A flash memory. I already checked the datasheets and there is no compatibility problem.

The problem is that before putting the flash on the PCB to bring the board to be soldered in the oven, I must to program it. I have a TL866 programmer and would only need a TSOP32 to DIP adapter socket. Here I have an adapter TSOP32, 40 and 48 to DIP, but today when I go to check it I find that the chip is much narrower, 14mm, while the socket is for 20mm wide chips.

I thought that TSOP32 was something standard and that this socket format had only one size as it happens with other socket formats.

Can someone confirm if the 14mm wide TSOP32 chips have another denomination to differentiate them from the 20mm wide TSOP32 ??. I am very surprised that with the same denomination there are two different widths because that can be confusing.

Looking at Mouser I have not found these flash memories with a width of 20mm, although they say they are TSOP32. There are TSOP48 of 20mm but they are 4 Mbit, too much for what I need (1Mbit). On Aliexpress I have found TSOP32 to DIP adapters, which they also call VSOP32, for 14mm wide chips, but they do not specify the pinout of the DIP adapter or if are compatible with TL866 programmers.

At least one manufacturer is confirming something.

ADA-TSOP32-14
ADA-TSOP32-20

I am using the SST39SF040 (TSOP32) in my project and looked into the possibility to flashing it before soldering it to the board. Unfortunately the TL866 I have only comes with an adapter for the wider TSOP32.
I now have the problem that I now cannot program the darn chip (while it should be connected properly)....I have been debugging the board for days to no avail... |O

That ADA adapter looks nice but is very expensive.

I ordered these two TSOP32 sockets from the Chinese, they are for 14mm wide chips. The one that goes with PCB I'm not sure if it has the correct pinout, that's why I also ordered the socket alone just in case I have to create my own adapter board for the TL866.

I have exactly the same requirement... SST39SF040 (TSOP32) programmed by TL866

Thanks for the link to the AliExpress product.  The wider PCB looks adaptable.

Wiki has only one Type I version for 32pin but two for 28pin.

Their reference is not very up to date, maybe 32pin number two is missing.

Today I received my TSOP32 adapter for 14mm narrow chips, bought from the chinese on Aliexpress, and it works perfectly with the TL866 II Plus programmer. Checked writing, reading and verification.

Good to know that the adapter from Aliexpress works. I used the expensive ADA-TSOP32-14 together with the TL866. I found out that, somehow, the chip I already had soldered to the board does not work at all. After soldering a new one - programmed via the adapter - I found out I had some errors in the CPLD code. I would have never found it with out being able to look at some recognizable data instead of a blank flash.

I received my adapter but have had no luck with my TL866A MinPro using MiniPro v6.85

When I select SST39SF040 it suggests I need the adapter...

I did try making an adaptor adaptor....

to plug onto the adaptor I bought some time back...

but no far no luck talking to the device.

I managed to get it to work by selecting

but this makes absolutely no sense...

since the adapter has pin 1 of the device actually appears on a pin half way down the right hand side.

Go figure!

I checked the datasheet and the pin assingments are not the same between the TSOP and the PDIP version... e.g. A11 appears on pin 1 of the TSOP but is found on pin 25 of the PDIP.

Is there some kind of magical convention for devices between the TSOP and their PDIP equivalents??
