There are only a few online tests of charge retention of different brands of NiMH cells. However, I worry about counterfeit of any brand moreso eneloops, and so-so quality of other legitimate brands.
I have a 20+ stock of Tenergy LSD AA that are 1/2/cell the price of eneloop, but after several years of using them, I can clearly say they do not hold their charge over time as well as eneloop first generation. They advertise 85%+ 1 year which I can confirm in real year-time, a spec given for 1st generation eneloop, but in side by side tests eneloop 1st generation is far over 95% charge retention. The more recent generation eneloops claim ~ loss 0%/ 2 years.
Panasonic lists its actual spec fairly conservatively:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eneloop#ComparisonOver time I replace batteries because I lose or damage them [ e.g. falls into salt water and shorts itself to death].
I also find eneloop tolerates cold better than most other cells, easily 0C or less.
That said, I think a better bet for buying NiMH is online purchase of eneloop from reliable authorize sources or its rebadged as Amazon Basic.
