Title: Underground cable fault locator thumpers
Post by: Mugiwara303 on March 27, 2022, 03:09:18 pm
Hi everyone,
I need some help with surge generators "thumpers" that are used to locate faults in underground cables, especially the receiver like digiphone+2, how does it detects the surge pulse is it acoustic or electromagnetic, and how it's detecting only the surge pulse sound, I couldn't find any information online

Thumping sounds like a gunshot at the sending send! Its looking for insulation failures where the thump, a high energy discharge, induces an accoustic and EM wave at the flashover point.
the detector is both a radio reciever of sorts and an siesmophone. Its not fantastically accurate and TDM will be used to try and pinpoint the failure.
