Title: Understanding of Thermal metrics of PCB, heatsinks, How heat flow - Books

I want to understand more about Thermal metrics of PCB (Like how traces, Vias, planes etc interact thermally how they will get cooled), Heat sinks designing (like Fin structure, spacing, materials how they will affect cooling efficiency etc)
How thermals flow ( i am an electrical & electronics engineer, so, If i get books which have similarities to explain thermals in electrical point of view also like heat waves to Electro magnetic waves it will be good).

I need any books which can help in understanding these flows. I will take lot of time understanding basics because i am beginner.

Thermal Analysis and Control of Electronic Equipment by Kraus & Bar-Cohen (McGraw-Hill 1983) is vintage but covers what you likely need for basic understanding before drilling in to commercial product data.

Are you just after general theory, or product specific performance, or application specific, or ?

What do you mean by "heat waves to Electro magnetic waves" - perhaps thermal radiation from one object/surface to another, or transmission through media that have transmission that varies with wavelength (like different glass acting as a vacuum interface)?

Hi Trobbins,

I want to understand general theory specific to Heat transfer in PCB's & Application specific details again for Thermals on PCB,heat transfer mechanism on PCB.

What do you mean by "heat waves to Electro magnetic waves"  --> As i am electronics person if some analogy between EMI phenomina to heat transfer, electric analogies (like R,L,C, u,epsilon etc) to Thermal constants will helpful in faster learning of Thermals in PCB

Any engineering assessment of a particular configuration starts with a representation of the pcb by thermal resistances, such as conductive through the pcb mass, convective away from the pcb surfaces, and radiative away from the pcb surfaces.  Kraus and Bar-Cohen go through practical examples (as I recall), and of course other examples of other devices provide similar assessments (eg. the 1962 RCA Electron Tube Design book is on-line and has thermal assessment of tubes including a detailed one on the 6L6).
