I recently came across a board design with a USB micro B port that had the (unused) USB VCC wire capacitively coupled to ground and the USB shield inductively coupled to ground. To me this sounded like two completely contradictory arguments about how to handle noise (one a noise highpass to ground, the other a noise lowpass to ground).
In my searches I came across this video. I'm glad to see I'm not too insane in my thinking.
... and yes my design also uses a split ground plane. I was almost there by putting my ADC directly on the spot where I join the two ground planes, BUT some of my signal wires cross in a non-joined spot, so I'll change that now
