hi
I'd like to build an Uninterruptible Power Supply for an SBC engine operating at 12V.
The engine needs 5A, and I'd like to use a common lead-acid battery.

I have Googled, but I have only found confusing schematics, and I'd like to see something educational with a pretty description.

Thanks

What is a SBC engine? Single cylinder?

This may help you:

SBC = single board computer. It's a x86-compatible computer on a single board, it has a video graphic unit and hard drive and it eats 4 Ampere. The UPS is required to let the computer to shutdown correctly the hard drive without damaging the filesystem.

Thanks for the link  :-+
