my new favorite opamp - tda1308
« on: December 29, 2014, 02:03:47 am »
TDA1308 is a headphone amp from NXP. TSSOP/DIP8 packaging, 5Mhz, 5v/us, 5v, and 60ma dual amplifier, with the typical dual opamp pin out.

Slower than your NE5532, slightly more expensive but has better current capability. It also has a size advantage, being smd.

Here is one wired up as an oscillator, at 42Khz.

Just how fast will it go?

Here is one at 1.7Mhz:

About 3v of swing, under 5v rail.

Would it go any higher?

How about 1.9Mhz? Swing is down to 2.5Vpp, though.

So I think the top end is probably around 1.5Mhz, practically speaking.

That would still make it a good candidate for or IF amplification:

Here it is, oscillating at 570Khz, practicaly rail to rail.

NE5532 would still be my go-to opamp. However, if I never need a beefier, low voltage / (almost) rail-to-rail opamp, tda1308 sounds like a good alternative.

Aah, yes, much love for the NE5532 dual op-amp. Many a stereo amp project achieved. Wipes the arse off all those audiophiles. I'm amazed it is still going, but then 555 and 741 are still being made so why not?

Just how much faster is a 5532?

Here it is, at 2.7Mhz, :)

More than enough to be used in an AM radio.

That's very good, considering the datasheet only gives 170kHz for the full power bandwidth.

I like the TL072 which also has a quad version. The bandwidth maybe lower but it has a higher slew rate and much lower bias currents. On the downside, the output current is low.

TL082 at 70Khz (also works up to 800Khz):

sorry for being an asshole... but what's the point of bumping your own thread every few minutes ?  :-// do your measurements and post a overall summary instead of bumping every few minutes !

LOL. Haven't you figured out posts like yours are exactly the motivation behinds dannyf's game? Obvious because he has stepped it up ten fold since similarly taken to task couple days back:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/el-cheapo-mcu-based-lcr-meter/
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/my-new-favorite-opamp-tda1308/
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/hx711-based-milliohm-meter/

This is characteristic of all aspie personalities but we shouldn't complain. Not because it's exactly what they are after but really because it's one of the most wonderful sources of entertainment on the net. And these guys do tend to contribute and innovate technologically and approach things from outside the box. Much more interesting than "my fpga board don't run under window 9" or "how come I can't flash my MCU". Enjoy, don't criticize.

What? It takes one to know...what? LOL

ps. Vintage parts can be fascinating but for power op amps check out TDA2822M. Two watt, rail-to-rail (works off an AA cell), almost no external components required, and you get two high power opamps for around a dime on Ebay. Or one VERY high power amp.
