What can I do with this - Garmin Handheld GPS circa 2000
« on: April 21, 2015, 09:21:58 pm »
Cleaning out a drawer I found this - an old Garmin GPS I got to do geocaching. It's old school black and white and serial RS-232 port. I don't have any need for it now. Runs on 3V, last time I had it on it found the satellites. What can I do with it? Can I get some kind of frequency standard out of it? Any ideas? I'll take it apart but I haven't found out how yet.  :( Might have to be a destructive tear-down.

I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

The standard NMEA output over RS232 will not be accurate enough for any kind of time reference. Maybe inside you can find something that is stable but I doubt it.

it will be within half a second.  for clocks that 'set themselves' that's good enough.

maybe you can find a PPS signal on a chip or trace somewhere, inside?

the gps modules I buy from ebay are $15 and have serial nmea as well as pps (via a led).  gps is cheap, these days, even with pps output.

Another vote as clock - I've been using my old TomTom as the time standard for the house.

The serial data doesn't give me fractional seconds, but good enough that I know I am +-1 second from real time out there.

Why wreck it? If it still works sell it, give it away to someone who can use it. E.g. my Legend became a backup-GPS aboard a sailing vessel.

Wrt use as a clock: these units do not have particularly sensitive rx so your clock better be close to a window.

:palm: Don't understand all these people wrecking functional stuff.  As if we do not have enough e-thrash

I gave my old Magellan hand held to a local fisherman at Vanuatu.
He religiously takes the batteries out when not used and it helps to find home if things go pear shaped.

Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.
