What is this old (1982 vintage) chip
« on: March 06, 2019, 11:33:03 pm »
I can't find anything on this chip. Looks pretty fancy with all the gold coating but nothing comes up on the name. I can't find the logo either. Any help would be great

Ceramic package, 18 pins.

Thanks
David

Hmm...that is a challenge.  Wafer foundries existed back then, so that any podunk company could make a chip and brand it.  This feels like one of those examples.  I have done some looking and will continue.  Pop the lid and see what is inside.

That could very well be a custom chip, so obviously knowing what kind of device it was in would help.

It's not necessarily a single chip either. It could be some kind of hybrid containing several parts. That was common practice back then.

Opening it may not be trivial as it kind of looks like the lid was laser-welded. Maybe with a Dremel, a diamond cutting disc and a lot of patience and care.

Does it have pins or just that white wire?

Looks like you've found it. The Hybrid Systems logo matches the original photo as well.

@gamalot: good catch! And it was indeed an hybrid. But now there is no need for a Dremel ;D (unless the OP nicely wants to crack it open and post some photos ;D )

That's fantastic.  I was thinking Sipex but the logo didn't match. Thank you gamalot and everyone.
I am going to breadboard a test circuit to see if it still works.

I can't remember where I found it. It was in some old lab equipment most likely that was being disposed. Maybe an old mass spectrometer.

Thanks again
