What kind of varistor is this?

Can anyone identify this component, possibly a varistor?

I would say it is a capacitor 1n5 F. The 400 V AC and peak 4kV rating, along with all the other certification logos suggest that it is rated for safe use on mains.

It's a 1.5 nF Mica cap for mains use.

This is fun :)

It's a 1.5nF 400V AC, 4kV AC test, Ceramic.  Note that while it's certified for flamability, it's not suitable for use (unprotected by a fuse) across the mains as it doesn't have an X or Y marking.

Edit: Y2 would require 5kV test and Y1, 8kV.

Thanks everyone.
I saw the 1n5 marking,
but it never occured to me that it could be anything but a varistor.

The markings say it has mains use approval for Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, US, GB, which then automatically leads to approvals for other countries, generally all of the EU. It's approved for Y and X1 use.

It's ceramic and older than 1994, where the approval markings changed (X or Y specifically marked on the part).

what gave that away?
the VDE triangle?

No, it's just a question of when the standards changed due to EU harmonization rules and the shift to using the ENxxxxx norms.
Here's an example: pdf.datasheet.live/datasheets-1/vishay_presicion_group/7/WKP102MCPTD0K.pdf

Good find on the datasheet. I must admit to being a bit puzzled to see a BS415 marking on what looked to be a relatively modern (well at least, clean) looking part.

Sadly topical.  :(
