Wiring up an RGB POV toy
« on: November 12, 2019, 11:04:44 pm »
I'm working on a little spinning POV toy with 8 common cathode rgb LEDs.
My plan it to wire them to an atTiny85 through 3 daisy chained 74HC595 shift registers.
I'm just wondering about the best way to arrange this.
The simplest way would be to just wire up in series, with 3 pins per LED. Alternatively I could split things out so that I have one physical shift register for each colour. This would of course mean a bit of a tangle of wires.

I'm inclined to go with the first option that gives the simpler wiring and let code worry about packing pixel data.  Has anyone here done similar project in the past? Any advice is greatly appreciated?
