Not sure how you intend on programming things but I recently did a number to names conversion using this code.  I'm not even sure this would be useful to you, I just gave that page a cursory look.  My clock was a lua plugin for conky if anyone's interested in how I did things it's here.

Nice project! I just finished a word clock myself.

I control the words as a whole, so I just need to have 24 outputs. I use an Atmega 328 with 595 shift registers and high side drivers.
For the front panel I had to buy the original one from clocktwo, because getting it made locally would be much more expensive and I didn't want to gamble with quality.

If you have any questions, just ask.

I'm just using a DS1307 RTC. But I would probably use a more precise RTC for the next project.

What do you think makes this clock uniquely different? Is it just the words, or maybe the large square design, the backlit letters, the artistic statement, or something else?

Because clearly you could tell the time in words on any typical dot matrix display. I imagine the appeal is more to do with the large, picture size design that hangs on the wall like a piece of art?
