Thanks for all the advice.  PlainName and abeyer hit the nail on the head.  My worries exactly.  I had that obsolete issue with emails already. Creeping charges, like the change from license to rent will happen.  And the spying aspect is particularly worrisome.  When I worked, I kept two desktops.  One, which was used for work-related stuff, was never connected to the Internet.  Microsoft did whatever it could do to require a connection (late 1990's & early 2000).  The popups and Google search returns are clear evidence to me I'm being spied on.  Avast recently got fined by the FTC (https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2024/02/software-provider-avast-will-pay-165-million-compromising-consumers/ ) for selling that information.

@shabaz
That's a good point.  There are a few occasions when I would like to share without using a thumb drive.  Since both are on the same wifi local network, I read there were ways to do that, but so far, I have been unsuccessful (Windows 7 desktop to Windows 11 laptop).

Microcontrollers / Re: rp2040 MCU pll derived clocks jitter?
« Last post by SiliconWizard on Today at 08:53:21 pm »
The question of whether it matters should also be considered. If you need a low-jitter clock, you can feed an external clock to the RP2040. Note that the datasheet specs a Fmax of 50 MHz. But the clocking scheme is flexible, so you could use the internal PLL as a clock source for the core and an external clock for some peripherals (as long as 50 MHz max. is ok.)

Test Equipment / Re: Siglent SDS800X HD 12 bit DSO's

SDS814X HD running on Linux time lost 7s vs SDS1104X-E on NTP time.
That's considerably more than 25ppm.  About 6 times.  It's also far worse than any watch or clock I have.

Maybe an enquiry to Siglent to find out where the OS timebase is coming from? :-//
Which fuels this thought....
Maybe it would have been prudent to manually Sync SDS1104X-E NTP time before taking the measurement.....

i need an analog Z input for testing old arcade pcb's properly,
my old D83 RACKMOUNT is huge and heavy - i'd like to replace it with a modern scope, but i must have variable blanking - trigger tricks of on/off blanking isnt going to do it
Telequipment ?

Nice CRO using a Tek 7603 CRT providing a very crisp trace.
Was my first scope.

What are the hidden costs/risks/inconveniences to Microsoft's OneDrive?  My newish laptop keeps wanting to save to it.
Not E2E encrypted, they spy on you and false positives have happened. Greater odds of getting hit by lightning, but still.

Coupling two functions with some auto type of reaction is not welcome here.
I am OK with that, but then it should be clearly visible, that it is currently not activated.

With many analysis packages there is enabled or disabled. Like decoding for instance.

For some analysis packages you have two separate states: analysis package activated and separate testing progress on/off.

That is like that for Bode plot, Power analysis etc.
This is so for Mask test also.

If you enable Show statistics, it shows it is not counting.  If you enable [Stop on fail] it will not exit Mask mode but only stop testing.

We might have some additional message somewhere that would mean "testing in progress".
But in reality it is counting up the number tests performed as it works, as an indicator it is working.
We might ask for something obvious in addition to Info lines (something like "Collecting/Paused"), but basic indicators are already there.
I also keep side menu folded out all the time when doing Mask test, so I see it there.

Beginners / Re: How can a 50V 100 uF electrolytic be so small??

joy of having one of those wet electrolytics explode from overvoltage with a BANG and glorious confetti paper eruption!
with a very disgusting smell
...

At least it's not as bad as the cloud of nasty magic smoke that comes out of a dipped tantalum that turned into a candle.  That smell sticks around for days.
