RF, Microwave, Ham Radio / Re: Analog amplifiers for pulsed LIDAR
« Last post by tggzzz on Today at 08:50:27 am »
Now we have a new way to start every post about lasers: "tggzzz, no need to comment. Please go away."

As long as you make the point I would have made, that's perfectly sane :)

Basically every time I see a child about to run into the road without looking, I will warn them. What would other people do? What should other people do?

Perfect let's analyze again what you said in the light of your recent analogy. It really shows the difference between your post and what you think you are doing.

in your original post you quote
" Fundamentally, I really don't care if it blinds you, but I do care about random people passing by. "

So effectively in the light of your analogy what you are actually doing is warning the kid running into the road because you care about the cars and the people driving, not the child itself. Or is it not the person working with the laser at highest risk of being damaged by set laser?

Or are these not your comments?

I'm not feeding this particular troll anymore.

Test Equipment / Re: SDS800X HD Bugs/Wanted Features

May not be a bug, it is a character encoding display issue. You can use NI MAX ASCII code to parse, or read data in Python and then use ASCII code to parse.

I have analysed the data that comes out of the scope. It matches the data printed in the browers. The display format has choosen to be decimal (on the scope). I think this bug only happens, when there ir a greater amount of datasets.

Maybe even an option to disable Auto-Setup for the educational market, where students should learn to setup their instruments optimally and not relying on an uninspired auto-setup. In this case re-enabling over the menu has to be locked via password.

The RTB2000 has had this feature for many, many years already:

https://www.rohde-schwarz.com/webhelp/RTB_HTML_UserManual_en/Content/622eab43fb1040a9.htm#d803048e19117

But to be honest, I'm not sure how widely it is used.

I work in test equipment for a living and use autoset constantly as a starting point when configuring a scope.  I'm not sure I entirely understand all the people who think autoset somehow makes people lazy or prevents them from learning how to configure scope settings properly.  Autoset is the beginning, not the end :)

This would be sensible especially for the low cost instruments like the SDS800X HD, as they're likely to become popular in the educational market.

I'm curious to see whether these "low cost" instruments start penetrating the academic market in the United States.  Most universities seem to either still buy instruments from the "major" manufacturers, or they have their students buy their own "personal" all-in-one instruments such as the Digilent Analog Discovery.  Are any universities in the United States buying Siglents, etc. instruments in bulk for their labs?

It would have been nice if you stated the input/output voltage requirement. I think must people here where under the assumption that Vin=Vout.

In this case 5V in and multiple 12V out, but it is somewhat flexible. Could be 9V in and 10V out.
But input has to be under 12V with some room for regulation and outputs needs to be 8-15V

If you’re making supplies for isolated gate drivers, then you’ll need to carefully consider winding-to-winding capacitance.

Yes, but only switching DC so na,

Can you tell us about your detailed specifications, such as wire size, number of turns, core specification ER or EE and additional...
I might be able to help you in China.

Thanks for the offer, I don't have any spec yet, or looked into creating one.
I was just curious if it made sense to go down that path for lowish qty.

At least it's not on fire.
Yet/so-far.
Why would you expect this to happen, given that no indications so far point towards anything even distantly fire-related. The Dali is now at rest, and ships at rest don’t normally just burst into flame.

The two sources of smoke initially reported by some have since been explained: the black smoke is from the engines, and the “smoke” at the point of impact is concrete dust, isn’t it?
Mostly in jest, but grounded ships have subsequently caught fire in the past so its not implausible.

Metrology / Re: Null Detector based on Conrad Hoffman design check

That's interesting, seems the difference is that your design has a + indicator as well as a - indicator.
Can you please share the LTspice file? I'll pack it with the detector files.
Later I'll share the KiCad source too, when all is done.
Find attached the .asm file for the 5V low monitor. As Kleinstein stated current consumption is pretty high, 4mA almost. Need to investigate an alternative way maybe.

Mechanical & Automation Engineering / tips for preventing card rage?
« Last post by coppercone2 on Today at 08:37:52 am »
What techniques are there to reduce the incidence of card rage (when you have to fit a card in a box)?

My plan that will probobly somehow be foiled is
1) use staked standoffs on PCB
2) insert transfer screws to do layout

Of course I tried to do this , but i forgot the order of assembly (another module had to be installed on top first), which means that I put in screws, installed the top module and then tighten the bottom thing on the screws that were kinda wedged under the top module. It might spin or it might not spin.I got lucky but by the end of the ordeal I was candidate for a zoo exhibit. I don't know what disassembly will look like down the line, perhaps it will be easier because I would not have just been finished with hours of painful deburring, painting, etc.

Other techniques
1) use nibbler to remove parts of the top flange so that screw drivers can fit (life saver, no mess, you can capture the segment you cut off even if the boards are installed without the post file or worse burr cleaning)
2) keep carbide drills on hands for all sizes to be able to mod card holes neatly with less rage
3) mini vacuum cleaner hose adapter
4) extra long aviation drill set. I need to get these, and a extra long countersink
5) really beefy right angle flathead screw driver, because you can use it to pry a heatsink up if you misdrill a hole by 0.5mm and you can't fit the screw. Like a lever. Just be careful.
6) nice new set of sharp files particularly round one in coarse, fine and diamond fine.
7) as much deburring supplies as you can afford (there is ALOT).
8) stainless steel KEPS nuts so  you can ground through paint if you forgot
9) big ultrasonic box for cleaning stuff before painting. I am always surprised by how much crap ends up on the bottom of the ultrasonic even after something has been washed and rinsed etc. that is how you get good paint jobs
10) PID oven for baking before and after painting so your not at the mercy of condensation, temperature ,etc

There must be some handy chassis tools to make this a more civilized proceeding. I mean when it goes wrong because making an assembly plan for something you make on a weekend is just LAME (30$ an hour MINIMUM required!). Especially if its a mod for something that is already a major piece of shit and the time use of modifying it is borderline insane.

I feel like every chassis project I try to make it more professional and something ends up kicking my ass. I like steel boxes and grounds so no 3d printer.

THis is meant for making more advanced hammond box designs go smoother

Can the confirmation for Auto Setup be turned off (disabled)?

My old HP scope does not do this.

It really does hold me up having to go back and press Continue.

At present, you can execute it by pressing the "Auto Setup" physical button twice.
The Wanted Features list have added whether a second confirmation is required.

Removing confirmations on functions that reconfigure many settings on a scope you just took 10 minutes to setup is bad idea in my opinion.

"This operation will format your drive C:. Do you want to continue?" Definitely good to have confirmation sometimes.  Auto and Default button should have confirmation, if you ask me...

If I may give advice to people posting here:

To add some new feature or change some way of doing things on whole platform of scopes takes resources(because if they change how windowing works, for instance, it is now like 10 scopes to be changed, regression tested etc..) .
Sometimes significant changes, which might not be obvious from user perspective.

Feature requests that expect features of 3x higher class of scopes are unrealistic. Let's be real here.
Changes in UI, behavior etc. that are based on personal preferences and/or simply wanting for a device to work in different way just because are also not realistic.
If you want a scope that works exactly like "that other brand" it means you should buy "that other brand". One manufacturer will never exactly copy other one for various reasons.
Every new product will have it's own idiosyncrasies. That is just fact of life.

What needs to be reported are bugs : if you enable Video triggering and it doesn't work, spend some time figuring out what happens so you can report it in a way that will be reproducible.
Any bug that is reproducible, immediately goes into Siglent's pipeline. No kidding. Sometimes takes time to make fix and for fix to reach FW update, but bug report goes into pipeline in a matter of hours.
They fix bugs, because that is what is their responsibility and they wish to have good reputation of well working products.
That is something that is in their interest.
But bug must be a bug to be fixed. A malfunctioning function. Fact that you think something should work differently is not a bug, per se. It might be, but also you might just be a picky eater... Just saying.

As for feature suggestions, let me be blunt: these are not feature requests. Those are suggestions and wishes.
If you don't have separate paid contract in addition to your bought device, where you a paying for the service of developing custom instrument, manufacturer is not obliged to listen to all the whimsical musing of all of the 7 billion people on the planet.
Go to Keysight or R&S and demand features... We have Paul here from R&S and he can explain how it works. If manufacturer can make some changes they will gladly do it, if possible (technically) and if it is appropriate to the device class and if it fits in their long term strategy.

As for suggestions and wishes, it is wise not to get lost in trivial.
Ask for things that from experience it was proven that this and that would make your life easier. If a function that is 3 levels deep in menu is something that you use all the time and it is waste of time, and if 100 users in the world ask for it, it might be considered.
If one person doesn't like it, and 10000 other users don't care, there is large chance it will not be considered. Just being realistic here.
Also, explaining use case and providing a good rationale behind the feature request is necessary to make a case for the feature.
To put it simply, explain why it is USEFULL to have a feature. Fact that you simply like something or not is not necessarily relevant.

Otherwise we get to story of the boy who cried wolf all the time...

Test Equipment / Re: open source GPIB adapter
« Last post by dazz1 on Today at 08:33:47 am »
Hi
A question for those with experience debugging gpib.  Is it still useful to have a breakout board to read the gpib signals??

The reason I ask is because I have HP54645D scope with 16 channel digital logic inputs like this one  https://metalab.at/wiki/Datei:HP54645D.jpg.  If I make a gipb breakout board, I can plug the flat cable into the scope and board.  No fiddly probes.
The same board could be used with a HP logic analyser because they use the same cable.

Some may argue, that this is a not bug, but i think i have sufficient experience with an edge trigger to say this is a bug.
The trigger works on the upper limit as expected.

Find attached the setup file. Feel free to investigate this too!
