DIY Battery Bank from Recycled 18650
« on: April 28, 2024, 11:00:24 pm »
Someone on facebook is selling these:

I attempted to let the seller know this is a dangerous build, but they don't seem to care.

I thought it would be worth while getting opinions (technical and rational) from the community so they can see that it's not just me being annoying.

What are your thoughts on using random batteries that are soldered together in this way?

Fantastic, if you want set your home on fire. This is wrong on so many levels. It basically goes against all good practises where it comes to building Li-ion battery packs. The fuses will not help against the number one issue: when a Li-ion cells goes off, the thermal runaway will ignite the surrounding cells.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I assume they're fuses. I'd like to ask them why they're only used on specific cells...

Depends on application.

(the build itself is weird regardless of application, though)

Hundreds of crappy solder joints on something you're supposed to spot weld.

No insulation.

Mixed mystery cells.

No BMS/protection.

That's just what I see not knowing anything about the details of lithium bank assembly. I just report and move on in this sort of situation, all you can really do.
