Island inverter can be PWM or Phase-shift?

(1/1)

Faringdon:
Hi,
We are doing an islanded inverter for use just with washing machines, fridges etc, possibly showers too......is it best to do it with PWM'ing...as in the attached LTspice....or Phase-Shift switching of each leg?

Also, for a mains non-GT inverter, it looks like it'd best be done with SiC FETs,  because you cannot avoid turning the top FET on when the bottom diode in the same leg is in full conduction...would  you agree?...in fact, it makes you wonder how they did high frequency mains inverters before sic FETs were brought in?....maybe very low frequency and very staunched switching speeds?

'Modified sine wave' is what almost everyone did, to a greater or lesser extent.

If you do it with say 3 rails or such you can actually get remarkably acceptable THD without any need for high speed switching on the output side.

Granted, at 6+kW that may or may not be the sane approach...
